Chronic pain and neurodivergence—two topics that dominate my existence. It took me 45 years to discover I was neurodivergent, and six years before that, my chronic pain started. The last decade has been both a journey of self-discovery and a deeply challenging experience. Through this time, I’ve learned that holistic stress relief and alternative healing for chronic pain can play a significant role in improving well-being.
When I was diagnosed with ADHD, dyspraxia, and a sprinkle of autism, my life suddenly made sense. My mind reeled as I revisited my past, realizing that I wasn’t just “different” for no reason—I had been neurodivergent all along, and my emotional health was intricately linked to my physical symptoms.
Neurodivergence, Emotional Healing and Chronic Pain
Reflecting on my childhood and early adulthood, I understood why my “over-emotional” behavior felt so out of place. I had been carrying an overwhelming emotional burden, and it became clear that this emotional weight was manifesting as chronic pain. My emotional healing was crucial for relieving these physical symptoms.
As I began journaling and exploring my emotions through self-reflection, I realized the undeniable connection between my mental and physical well-being balance. This was a powerful realization—if I could address the emotional distress inside me, I might be able to reduce the pain I was experiencing.
The Mind-Body Connection and Nervous System Regulation
Mind-body science tells us that there is a powerful nervous system regulation aspect in both chronic pain and neurodivergence. Stress and unresolved emotions can dysregulate the nervous system, causing the body to misfire and create physical symptoms. Nervous system regulation techniques, such as mindfulness, deep breathing, and journaling, can ease the pressure on the nervous system, allowing the body to calm and the mind to focus on healing rather than pain.
Dr. John Sarno’s work on Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS) highlights this mind-body connection. He showed that repressed emotions often manifest physically, causing symptoms like chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and chronic pain. By calming the mind and body, we can begin to address these deep-rooted emotional sources of illness and achieve relief.
Healing Chronic Illness Naturally
For years, I had no answers to the fatigue and pain that plagued me. But when I began focusing on healing chronic illness naturally, through self-acceptance and emotional exploration, everything changed. This isn’t about masking symptoms or relying solely on medications—it’s about understanding the mind-body connection and recognizing that emotional health is a core component of physical well-being.
My chronic pain was not just a physical problem but an emotional one. As I worked on processing repressed emotions and accepting my neurodivergence, my pain began to ease, my energy returned, and my overall health improved.
The Scope of the Problem
So, how many people with neurodivergence are suffering from chronic pain without realizing the emotional link? How many are experiencing chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia and aren’t aware of the role that their nervous system and repressed emotions play in their illness?
Many of us in the neurodivergent community carry emotional baggage that we may not even be aware of. These unresolved feelings often surface as pain, fatigue, or other baffling physical symptoms. This is why holistic approaches, like energy healing for stress and other natural remedies for fibromyalgia, can offer relief where traditional methods fail.
